Omega is one of the world’s leading Swiss watch brands. It is a subordinate of the Swatch Group, the biggest watch company Universal. The brand has attained well-deserved rock-star status amongst watch enthusiasts everywhere.

Naming of Brand: At the year, 1848 Louis Brandt established the company that would become Omega in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In the year 1877,  his sons Louis-Paul and César joined him and the company name was replaced to Louis Brandt & Fils. In 1894, a campaign known as the Omega caliber became a global success. Thus finally, the company name was changed to Louis Brandt & Frére – Omega Watch Co., and the Omega brand name was born.

Master of the Sea: Omega launches its Seamaster line in the year 1948 when the brand Omega was celebrating its 100th anniversary. The Seamaster was loosely based on the watches Omega made for the British military at the end of World War II.

Omega produces several models of Seamaster watches, with numerous variations of colour, bracelet, movement, and casing sizes.

Speedy in Space: In the year 1962, some astronauts including Walter Schirra and Leroy “Gordo” Cooper walked into a watch shop in Houston looking for watches to use on their upcoming Mercury program flights. They selected Omega Speedmasters and thus it has a history of space exploration. Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the Moon’s surface, wearing his watch, and the Omega Speedmaster Professional became the first watch to be worn on the Moon. Thus the brand Omega has large histories of its popularity in space.

At the 50th anniversary of the Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph, the Omega company revealed Speedmaster Professional Chronograph Moonwatch. The watch had the distinguishing features of the first hand-winding Omega Speedmaster introduced in 1957.

Sports: Omega has frequently been the official timekeeper for the Olympics, beginning with the 1932 Summer Olympics. It was the official timekeeper for the 2006 Winter Olympics and for the 2008 Summer Olympics and did the same for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Omega went on to be an official timekeeper at no less than 21 Olympic Games, bringing numerous innovations to Olympic sports over the years, such as the first electronic timekeeping at the Helsinki games in 1952 – the same year in which the company was awarded the Olympic Cross of Merit for its outstanding contribution to sport. Omega has been the official timekeeping device of the Olympic Games since 1932.

In more recent years, Omega has continued to build on its status for accuracy and innovation, offering the world’s first self-winding wristwatch.

Omega owes a large part of its watchmaking excellence to the quality of its movements. These magnificent watches are highly collectable and hold a very special place in many collectors showcases.
